Pool Pump – How to Replace the Motor.
Today’s pool pump also known as water pump motor is more energy-saving and cheaper to run. If you have an older pool pump or the motor is loud or just stop working, you may want to think about replacing your pool pump motor.
Unless you are skilled at configuring electrical wires, you can replace it yourself in an hour or two. If you are the least bit unsure, protect yourself by having a licensed, trained pool technician to replace the motor.
Phase 1
Disconnect the power supply to the swimming pool pump
Make sure the swimming pool pump’s power switch is off. Shut off the breaker in the electrical panel box for the pool pump.
Phase 2
Open the swimming pool pump and separate the motor mount bracket.
The motor mount bracket is normally under the strainer basket housing which holds the filter basket and all the plumbing ports.
Release and remove the bolts that attach the motor mount bracket to the strainer basket housing.
Remove the pool pump motor from the strainer basket housing.
Leave the volute in the pump, which controls the water used to prime the pump for now.
Phase 3
Take out the pool pump motor.
Take the motor and its mount bracket steadily and pull them out.
Check for the gasket or O-ring seal that is between the motor mount bracket and the strainer basket housing.
Change it if it has rips, worn spots or no longer seats deeply into its location.
Phase 4
Inspect and separate the electrical wiring inside the motor. Find the copper ground wire and disconnect it.
Open the electrical cover plate on the motor. Check out the wiring.
The green-covered wire is the ground wire.
Disconnect all three wires from their fastenings.
Release the conduit, the sheath that covers the wires connecting the motor to the power switch or box. Loosen the compression nut attached to an adapter. Keep the adapter if you wish to reuse it, as the new motor may not have one.
Remove the power switch wires from the motor.
Phase 5
Release the impeller (a set of rotating blades inside the motor)
Take the volute off if it is on top of the impeller.
Find the impeller shaft end at the opposite side of the motor. Open its cover plate.
Use a box wrench or screwdriver to loosen and remove the impeller in a turning motion, opposite to the direction the impeller vanes rotate.
Find the position of the pool pump seal, normally a gasket or O-ring, and replace this seal when you restore the motor.
Phase 6
Remove the motor from the motor mount bracket.
Release the nuts that hold the motor mount bracket and pull out the bolts.
Phase 7
Install the new motor in the pump.

Restore electricity and test the motor’s function.
